Incredible Hulk, The

aka Hulk 2, I had no idea that the actors had been changed ... Edward Norton was stereotyped as per usual and Liv Tyler wasn't half as good as Jennifer Connelly. Is it just me or is she borderline chubby now? Give it a miss unless you're a fan of the series.

Hellboy 2

Insipid hollywood-ized version with poor direction, bad editing and a lacklustre story. Stay away from it.

Up

I watched Pixar's Up last week and I must say that it was a big disappointment considering all the hype surrounding it. Even though it was released in May, it is currently ranked #39 in IMDb's Top 250 list which I find rather flabbergasting.

Prometheus

I actually did not know that Prometheus is part of the Alien franchise. If I did, I would have given it a miss as such films are simply not my cup of tea. That said, the final product was reasonably entertaining. However, as with most of these horror-thriller movies, the script is marked with random bouts of unrealistic idiocy to get the plot moving, something that I really can't bear for any length of time.

I suspect that this will be a fun film to watch in 3D.

Men in Black 3

MIB3 is a good addition to the franchise. It starts off a little slow and vapid, with everybody (surely) cringing at TLJ's rubbery facade. But then there's an Austin-Powers like time-warp to 1969 and a younger TLJ (Josh Brolin) who livens things up. Good fun.

Safe

Standard Jason Statham bang-bang-boom-boom-whack-whack-crunch-crunch fare. However, there is one imaginative plot-point to the movie. The Chinese mafia in NYC import a young girl from China due to her memory and mathematical skills—she can remember any number that she sees and can perform calculations really quickly—in order to avoid leaving a paper or digital trail. The little girl is their walking, talking, account book. This inventive point aside, there are enough directorial and screenplay holes to drive your grandmother through in a pram.

Lockout

Submitted by Druss on Thu, 2012-08-16 13:21

A typical Luc Besson flick, Lockout features Guy Pearce and the chick from Taken (also a Besson venture). Lots of action, lots of witty repartee, a sci-fi backdrop and very little in the way of complexity when it comes to the plot, are the main selling points of the film. However, unlike Taken, which is also a rescue-flick, Lockout does not have an edgy feel to the mission, and is strictly a Hollywood-y entertainment adventure.

Pianomania

Pianomania is an interesting peek into the life of Stephan Knüpfer, a piano tuner working for Steinway as he tries to keep a bunch of concert pianists such as Lang Lang, Brendel, and Ainard happy. It's fun to get a behind-the-doors look into how pianos are set up, transported, and tuned. There are also a couple of laughs here and there. It would have been nice to get a little more technical and also hear some more music. It appears that I'll have to watch "Note by Note: The Making of Steinway L1037" to get my wish.

Marlowe

Submitted by Druss on Fri, 2012-07-13 12:47

Marlowe is one of those ambitious movies that attempt to bring out the dark gritty atmosphere that tends to be palpable in novels. Here, a director named Paul Bogart attempts to do the same for Chandler's Philip Marlowe. I was interested in this because of the Bogey reference as Humphrey Bogart plays an excellent Marlowe in The Big Sleep. But it turns out that Paul of the same name is no relation to Humphrey and it shows that his original name was Bogoff!
