Arbitrage

A film that teaches you that if you have the balls (and tons of money), you can get away with all kinds of shit. A good watch with solid performances by Richard Gere and the delectable Brit Marling of "Another Earth" fame. The casting is good and the direction is tight.

Moonrise Kingdom

Moonrise Kingdom is a lovely heart-warming movie about (an almost) teen-romance set in a picturesque island with a small community. In typical Wes Anderson (director) fashion, the characters are all a li'l whacky or idiosyncratic. The story and plot is good. The cast is great and the acting is mostly above par. The screenplay and direction, however, does not flow in some places giving things a strained feel. I also had to sit through a very Hollywood-sy ending. That said, the film made for enjoyable viewing. It's a recommended watch.

Hunger Games, The

Hunger Games is a bit like Brave New World meets Lord of the Flies meets Rambo. The flow is decent once you suspend disbelief for a good li'l while. The acting is all right and the action above par in places. However, the foundation upon which the plot rests is either inherently flawed or not explained well.

The movie was reasonably entertaining on the whole and going by the ending, there's a sequel coming soon.

Avengers, The

The Avengers is interesting as it unites characters from a number of other movies (a first?) to for a "super-team" of superheroes to save the Earth yada yada. However, it is terribly clichéd, the dialogues often vapid, and the plot resembles a sieve. That said, the whole point of the film appears to be a rather convoluted attempt at engineering a situation where the CG guys can have fun giving us a superhero war scene. And my, how they succeeded.

Watch the film for the battle scene towards the end. The rest is mostly dull.

Shrek the Third

I watched Shrek 3 yesterday and I am still in mourning over it. What was an entertaining part 1 has been sodomised into mindless drivel that is neither well written nor well animated or well voiced for that matter. I sincerely hope that there isn't going to be a part 4.

Hollywood should be banned from making sequels based on the commercial performance of a movie.

WALL-E

... and the winner by a country mile, Pixar's WALL-E. The CG was great as per usual, but the storyline and characterisation took the cake. Nobody wants to miss this one as it's definitely one of Pixar's best.

Dark Knight

Very good, but also highly overrated. Joker was great and the storyline was decent. However, Bale was average and the lack of Katie Holmes stung. I am probably one of the few who prefers the first part.

Iron Man

Submitted by Druss on Thu, 2012-09-13 09:47

Iron Man was surprisingly good, at least for the first half. The second half was well below par, with the scriptwriter not knowing what to do with this here superhero and thereby ruining the movie. However, Robert Downey Jr. was the clincher and elevated this movie to a "good". Based on the post-credits clip from The Incredible Hulk, it looks like the next movie will be Hulk vs. Iron Man which should be interesting albeit, with the end result obvious to everybody beforehand.
