Little Miss Sunshine is a compact and cute li'l flick about a slightly dysfunctional family who take a road trip from New Mexico to California, so that the (pudgy li'l) daughter of the family can take part in a beauty pageant for six and seven year olds. Each member of the family has their own quirks:
- Dad: Annoying overoptimistic overbearing stereotypical salesman type who is on the verge of being broke and a failure.
- Mom: Cigarette smoking, generally unhappy wife who is on the verge of divorcing her husband if his "deal" falls through.
- Son: Hates his family and has taken a vow of silence until he makes it into the airforce.
- Daughter: Pudgy, bespectacled (cute) seven year old who has been practising daily for the pageant under the tutelage of her grandpa.
- Grandpa: A drug addict and a lecherous, dirty old man who is guiding his grand daughter in her quest for first place in a pageant.
- Uncle (Mom's brother): Gay, unemployed and depressed academic who is recovering from a failed suicide attempt at his sister's home.
