KTorrent on the LTS release of Kubuntu—Precise Pangolin aka 12.04—is perfectly fine except for the fact that it comes only with version 4.1. Unfortunately, this package is missing a few features that I was looking for, especially the option to add magnet links via its web interface.
Upgrading from 4.1 to 4.3 (the latest version at the time of writing) is pretty straightforward if one is happy to accept PPA sources.
- Add the Kubuntu Precise backports repository to your system. (Information on how to do this is available on the linked page.) We need this repository enabled solely for one package,
libkworkspace4abi2
. - Similarly, add the PPA managed by a Dominik Stadler. FYI, this is technically a security risk as this is an unofficial source.
- Once added, ktorrent can be upgraded to 4.3.1 via the package manager of your choice.
sudo apt-get install ktorrent
If you like, once you are done upgrading ktorrent, you can disable the two added sources either via your package manager or by commenting out the appropriate lines in the appropriate files within /etc/apt/sources.list.d/
. Not disabling them will result in other PPA backports and upgrades also filtering down into your system.
