Konqueror, sFTP and FiSH

Submitted by Druss on Sat, 2008-11-15 00:33

I just found out yesterday that Konqueror natively supports sFTP and another protocol which I wasn't aware of named FiSH. To use either, just enter sftp://foo@example.com or fish://foo@example.com as necessary in the Konqueror URL bar to create a connection. My fledgling experience with FiSH seems to indicate that it's considerably faster than sFTP.

Live TV? P2PTV? Peercasting? Streaming video? Lifecasting?

Anyone else notice the rising popularity of live video / TV sites and applications all over the place? In the last year or so, what was just a niche service / application has exploded into the mainstream and I won't be surprised if established sites such as YouTube also manoeuvre to get a piece of this pie.

Presently available offerings can be segregated into two categories:

Cryocopy - placing webpages in ... cryogenic stasis

I came across a neat service named Cryocopy earlier today. What it essentially does is mimic the service provided by archive.org except for the fact that Cryocopy does it on demand instantaneously and saves a screenshot to boot.

    To quote:

CryoCopy is a web archiving service that allows manual caching of Internet pages, fully saving them both in HTML and in bitmap (PNG) format. This is done almost instantly upon request, not days or weeks apart, like with other services.

Download all files of a particular extension from a site / page

I quite often want to / have to leech all files of a certain type from a website. The best way to do this is by using wget. The following command will download all files of type mp3 from a website:
    wget -r -l1 -t1 -nd -N -np -A.mp3 http://example.com/mymp3s

Do this from within the folder where you want to download the files to.

This is actually more for my own record so that I don't have to man and google next time, but I'll try and explain all the switches when I'm motivated to do so :)

    Disposable / temporary e-mail providers

If you manage websites that involve user registrations, I'm sure you have come across users who use services such as mailinator to register. While these services are definitely handy, the users who use them generally tend to be spammers or those that don't necessarily plan to stay on at your website. The following is a list of sites / services / domains that provide services similar to mailinator, and have found their way into my block list.

    1. 2prong.com
      • miquosoft.com
    2. 10minutemail.com

itsyourturn.com - online scrabble and more

A friend put me onto itsyourturn.com a few days ago. The concept is not unlike other turn-based on-line games available around the Internet. However, while other sites (that I am aware of) concentrate pretty much on one game, here, there is a whole host of games available for you to waste your time on, and you aren't restricted to just one game at a time. So, you can be playing 5 scrabble (known as Jamble for trademark reasons I suppose) games, 5 backgammon, 5 ... etc. all simultaneously.
